Joan Crawford probably thought that she’d be remembered for movies such as ‘What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? ’, however, she went down in history as being a vicious adoptive mother. As soon as they left the vicinity of the house, the children stopped speaking in tongues and began to cry. The frightening ghost of a beautiful teenage girl has been seen by nearly everyone who has ever lived here since 1959. A feeling of doom and lurking presence, voices and other paranormal activities have all been reported.

Legends narrate the tale of two female spirits, a woman and a girl, clutching the clock, forever roaming the mansion’s corridors. The Villisca House, now dubbed the “Villisca Axe Murder House,” bears a ghastly legacy from 1912. An entire family met a gruesome end, and to this day their assailant remains unknown. Today, visitors recount unsettling experiences—doors with minds of their own, sudden cold patches and even physical assaults. Many believe that the house is haunted by the ghost of a maid who died here.

The White House is open for public tours, free of charge, though you must follow the procedure for requesting a visit through your state's senator or representative and undergo multiple security checks to enter. Alternatively, you can always view the outside from Lafayette Square or the Ellipse. Check out the Bell Witch Cave and John Bell Cabin in person — tours of the site in Adams, Tennessee, are available Wednesday through Sunday from May to October — and see if you encounter anything strange yourself. The home is open for in-person tours, and anyone who can't make the journey can try one of its equally spooky virtual tour options via "Ghostflix."

The death of his daughters left him heartbroken in the opulent Bowman House. Legends claim that the spirit of the bereaved father and his wife still roam the mansion, with one notable spectral incident involving a disdainful visitor and a suddenly dislodged portrait. Altoona’s Baker Mansion still echoes the heartbreak of Anna, the lovelorn daughter of Elias Baker. While the mansion today educates many as a museum, Anna’s spirit is believed to haunt her room, especially around a showcased wedding dress that eerily moves within its sealed case. Port Monmouth’s historic Spy House, a one-time tavern for British troops, resonates with tales of intrigue and espionage. Reports of mysterious weeping, the apparition of a lady in white and a sea captain stand as a testament to the house’s eerie past.

The Adams House is now a museum, and it is open to the public for tours. The ornate Belvidere Mansion in Claremore stands as a testament to John M. Bayless’s dream. Though he couldn’t witness its completion, legends say his family’s spirits linger on, with reports of mysterious sounds, self-flushing toilets and sudden temperature shifts. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on Hatteras Island stands tall, with whispers of Theodosia Burr’s restless spirit echoing around. Lost to a shipwreck in 1812, this descendant of a Founding Father is believed to haunt the lighthouse, endlessly searching the shore. In Carson City’s Governor’s Mansion, a seemingly innocent gift–a clock–is said to have unleashed spectral residents.

The original proprietors, Frank and Mary Henderson; along with Clare Burleigh; a war veteran; and an unidentified young girl and dog, are believed to inhabit the mansion. Unexplained occurrences include “Clare” written in fresh dust and eerie radio transmissions capturing a woman’s whisper. Bentonville’s Peel Mansion is proof that spirits yearn for familiar comforts. Visitors say that the ethereal presence of 1875’s Congressman Samuel Peel and his daughter, Minnie, is palpable.

The imagery conjures a supernatural patchwork of revenants and Superman. The content of these nightmares and obsessions doesn’t always resonate. Sometimes the feeling is fey; other times the literalization of song ideas flirts with corniness.

But the intensity of the dancer’s relationship to the material speaks volumes. CTG Artistic Director Snehal Desai and Managing Director Meghan Pressman lay out a tentative road map for recovery, including the reopening of one of the city’s most important stages. Personally, I was relieved not to bear witness to another forced marriage between script and score. When the book musical works — as it does gloriously this season in the revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” — there’s nothing more satisfying.

From places you ache to visit to places you would rather stay away from. Georgia's Netherworld has been consistently ranked as a top scary Halloween attraction. Rich Newman talks about his experiences while investigating Magnolia Manor in Boliver, TN. He also lets us listen to a recording of an EVP he captured while there. Rich Newman explains his DICE (“Detect, Interact, Capture, Escalate”) method of ghost hunting.

Several ghosts supposedly haunt the bridge, including possibly a worker who fell into the concrete during construction. The 1906 Alexandria, now low-income apartments, has been both one of the fanciest joints in Downtown and a rundown flophouse. Several dancers are said to haunt the second-floor ballroom, an angry teenager hangs around Charlie Chaplin's old suite, and Rudolph Valentino apparently leaves the Knickerbocker occasionally and visits his old 12th-floor suite.

Visitors eager for a taste of the supernatural can book tours of the site, while the bravest can spend the night and see what goes bump. In a majority of cases, upon scientific investigation, alternative causes to supernatural phenomenon are found to be at fault, such as hoaxes, environmental effects, hallucinations or confirmation biases. Common symptoms of hauntings, like cold spots and creaking or knocking sounds, can be found in most homes regardless of suspected paranormal presences. People are more likely to experience a haunting when they are about to fall asleep, when waking, or if they are intoxicated or sleep-deprived.

Regardless, it's possible that Winchester herself still haunts the halls of the house-turned-museum today. In 1886 an eccentric widow left her home in Connecticut for California's rural Santa Clara Valley to start a new life after the tragic loss of several family members. She wasn't the average widow; she was Sarah Winchester, the millionaire heiress whose fortune was derived from "The Gun That Won the West," an increasingly controversial truth. She named the rambling property Llanada Villa (which she interpreted as "House on Flat Land") but today, it's better known as The Winchester Mystery House. After it was built in 1926 for photographer John Sowden and his young family, the house enjoyed years of hosting bohemian parties for Hollywood's in-crowd.
