The Marsh Edge Escape was a full renovation from top to bottom. The goal being to bring the outside in while creating a modern, minimal, sophisticated home for this well traveled art enthusiastic couple to relax and unwind. The low back isn’t supportive—it almost feels like a cushioned stool because of how low the back is. The cushion is a little firmer, but that doesn’t bother me as much. I just cannot imagine sitting in this chair for more than 30 minutes because I would want to lean and could not. It’s about 29.9"W, 21.7"D, and 28"H. It is a very structured chair and good accent option in the corner of a smaller bedroom or living room.

In short, our lives of anxiety and routine in the United States have become lives of excitement and adventure. But mostly, we’ve found that people are far more alike than they’re different. And ironically, we’ve never felt more connected to other people. Despite not having a permanent home, we’ve never felt more rooted. Some were scary, like the time our apartment in Bulgaria caught on fire. Or when our plane across the Atlantic caught on fire and had to make an emergency landing in Boston.

The homeowners love to entertain, and guests love comfortable places to sit. So Minkhorst and Lentini added a mix of small round ottomans, accent chairs, barstools, and benches to the living room (above) and kitchen (below). MAKE WAVES“Architecturally, this is a stunning space,” Minkhorst says. At the base of the fireplace, they created a floating bench with the same quartz they used for the kitchen countertops.

We spent the winter in a “cohousing” community in Miami, Florida, designed specifically for digital nomads. Lentini and Minkhorst designed the white sofa in the sitting room, hired a local builder to make it, and added accent pillows to add touches of blue to the black-and-white theme. To make this high-contrast combination work for a longtime client’s lakefront home, Berkeley Minkhorst and Kelley Lentini used natural elements like wood, leather, and organic textiles for a warm, multi-dimensional space. That global-inspired aesthetic has become a signature look for the design duo, who launched House of Nomad five years ago. Black and white might look like a simple design theme, but it’s not easy to pull off. When it’s not, a black-and-white interior can seem sterile or flat.
This Beloved New York Hotel Has Opened Its Doors on the West Coast
Some people tell us they’re considering a digital nomad lifestyle themselves. As a result, we like to share practical information about the nuts and bolts of our newfound lives. Each NoMad is brought to life by the collaboration of a community of exceptional creative minds in architecture, design, art curation, food, beverage, and hospitality. Explore the stories contained within our walls and the people behind them.
The Kelly Wearstler wall sconce beside the fireplace complements the geometric node chandelier above the island. The upholstery is so cute and would really be a showstopper in any space. It’s a chair that would look so fun in a Scandi, boho-surf, or California-style home. It is a smaller chair, so it’s be best suited for an apartment or a smaller guest room.
There are very intentional bold pops of black and white throughout the house (a combo I will forever love) that creates some cohesion and personality in the house. The vintage chairs in the sitting area are a favorite of mine. My next door neighbor found them for me at a garage sale and I recovered them and restored them with my mom to take to college.
Awash in sumptuous velvet upholstery and miles of fringe, the lobby of the NoMad Los Angeles sets the tone for the hotel experience. Garcia nodded to the blue-and-gold color scheme of the Italianate lobby ceiling in his characteristically opulent designs for the hotel’s hospitality spaces and guest rooms. They took the time to understand the aesthetic we were shooting for, and have delivered above and beyond what we hoped. They encouraged us to take a few risks with some statement pieces, and we couldn't be happier with our choices.
Life
In 2016, we owned a nice house in Seattle with a good circle of friends, but we weren’t especially happy. It was partly our writing careers, which had both seen their share of ups and downs. It was partly the political situation in the United States, which seemed to be rapidly careening out of control.

And it was partly just living in America; we didn’t realize it at the time, but almost every aspect of American culture encourages people to be busy, anxious, and lonely. NoMad Los Angeles has also introduced The Lab, a new retail space curated by French collectors Emmanuel Renoird and Nicolas Libert, founders of Please Do Not Enter, a contemporary art and design gallery in downtown L.A. For design aficionados, The Lab may be just as compelling as Chef Humm’s famous roasted chicken à la NoMad. The arrival of NoMad Los Angeles, the West Coast outpost of the luxury hotel brand founded by the Sydell Group, is elegant proof that the renaissance of downtown L.A.—which has been touted for decades—is at long last happening. The hotel is located in Giannini Place, a historic landmark built in 1922 as the L.A. Headquarters of the Bank of Italy, a forerunner to Bank of America.
Secondly, they have a two-hour time limit which detracts from the kickback atmosphere of this lounge. So come hungry, roll deep with your friends (for only two hours), and bring a bottle to split. When it comes to design and shop selections, Kelley and Berkeley create their signature modern global aesthetic by layering textures, mixing patterns, and weaving in hand-selected finds from around the world. House of Nomad allows clients to get a taste of wanderlust without leaving their homes. The reimagining of the building’s interiors was orchestrated by AD100 designer Jacques Garcia, who riffed on the super-plush, moody vibe he conjured for the NoMad in Manhattan.
The stately neoclassical structure boasts Corinthian columns, a divinely coffered ceiling in the lobby, and felicitous period details including bronze entry doors surrounded by terracotta medallions of coins. The original bank vault, with its epic 50-ton door, has been transformed into chic restrooms for the lobby and restaurants. For one thing, its former prison cells and magistrates’ offices are significantly more comfortable now; the grade II-listed historical building is the latest addition to boutique hotel NoMad’s portfolio.
This seamless process takes you from mood boards and concepts to installation and everything in between. These projects typically start as a blank slate or with minimal pre-existing furnishings and we require a minimum of 3 rooms up to entire homes. Our opinion of being a digital nomad has only kept rising since then.

The life of a digital nomad means you’re constantly saying hello, and also constantly saying goodbye. But after seven years of doing this, we’ve also discovered that you can say hello again, by meeting up with old friends in new countries all over the world. How long have you lived here and what do you love most about the space? My husband Diek, Shelby (our pup) and I have lived in our home for over 6 years.
Guests of the hotel can enjoy the rooftop lounge/cocktail bar, which offers sweeping views of the downtown L.A. The space features a monumental outdoor fireplace modeled after the Orcus Mouth at the Garden of Monsters in Bomarzo, Italy--a kooky culture clash that feels right on the money. Berkeley, Kelley and the entire HON team are such a joy to work with.
Fast forward to now, they are dressed to impress in Schumacher Queen of Spain which will always be one of my most favorite fabrics. I also love the Worlds Away console under the basket wall in our living room – its so fun and love the layering it provides to the entire room. As in the New York property, the hotel offers a plethora of options for dining and drinking, all conceived by award-winning chef Daniel Humm and restaurateur Will Guidara, the powerhouse duo behind Manhattan’s Eleven Madison Park.
